Lübeck, October 17, 2024. In just three weeks, the 66th Nordic Film Days Lübeck, which showcases films from North and northeastern Europe, will open with the German premiere of the animated adventure “Flow” by Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis.

Advance ticket sales start in 10 days, on October 26, 2024. Tickets will be available online and at the CineStar Filmpalast Stadthalle in Lübeck for the 169 films that will be shown at this year’s Nordic Film Days in 212 public screenings. About 60% percent of that line-up will be available for streaming by audiences all over Germany. VOD availability begins on November 6 at 7 pm and will continue – for the first time this year – beyond the end of the festival, until November 17 at midnight.

Additional information is available at the festival website.

Above and beyond the opportunity to stream many of the festival films, which makes them accessible to people with limited mobility, this year’s Nordic Film Days is addressing the issue of accessibility across all sections. Many screenings will make accommodations for the blind and visually impaired, as well as the deaf and hard of hearing. To enable more people to participate in cinema culture, films will be shown with audio description and SDH subtitles. And selected events and discussions will be interpreted live into German sign language. For the first time this year, the NFL will also have screenings adapted to the sensory needs of neuro-diverse people, for instance, with early admittance, reduced audio volume, and dimmed lights. Complete information (in German) on accessibility of the festival venues and screenings can be found here: https://nordische-filmtage.de/de/info/barrierefreiheit

Part of the festival is the award of twelve jury and audience prizes, with a total endowment of 65,000 euros, in addition to the Honorary Award, which this year goes to Finnish actor Kati Outinen. The honorary prize will be awarded at the opening night ceremony on November 6, while the rest of the awards will be presented on November 9 during the gala Prize Night at Theater Lübeck. The Lübeck Script Development Grant goes into its second year, and the new recipients will be introduced during the opening night ceremonies on November 6.

Each year, the filmmakers from Europe’s North and northeast – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Sápmi present their newest narrative, documentary, and short films in Lübeck. The festival is especially proud to be showing three movies that have been submitted for consideration as Oscar nominees for best international film – not only the Latvian opening film “Straume” (“Flow”), but also “Pigen med nålen” (“The Girl With the Needle”) from Denmark and “Armand” from Norway. “XXL” by Kim Ekberg and Sawandi Groskind, made in Sweden, will celebrate its German premiere in Lübeck, as will “Mielensäpahoittajan rakkaustarina” (“Long Good Thursday”), a surprising romantic comedy by Finnish director Mika Kaurismäki. The Filmforum section spotlights films from and about northern Germany – “Billions Mike” is a portrait of Peter Mike Wappler, born in Lübeck, who first made a career for himself in Hamburg‘s red-light district and later with fictitious transactions and fraud.

And this year, the Immersion 360° section in the Infinity Dome at Klingenberg Square in central Lübeck, will begin a day before the festival officially opens. For the event, titled “Lübeck Hoch 3: Play the Dome!”, on November 5, a joint project by Lübeck’s universities will take over the dome. Admittance is free to the all-day programme, which encompasses pieces by the Laboratory for Immersive Media at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Lübeck (Prof. Isabella Beyer) and the Studio for Electronic Music at the University of Music Lübeck (Prof. Nicola L. Hein). During the festival, the section will showcase innovative filmmaking from the Nordic and Baltic countries, including a special focus on Sámi short films. “Contemporary art under the NFL FullDome beguiles audiences of all ages and creates a place of wonderment smack in the middle of Lübeck”, says section head Sebastian Häger.

The Young Audience section this year invites young and younger people to wander the world. Eleven long films coupled with four short film programmes will be complemented by special cinema+playtime screenings for the very littlest children.

The Retrospective section opens this year with a brand-new film project. In the hybrid documentary “Confessions of Thomas Mann, Confidence Man”, director André Schäfer traces the story of Mann’s process in writing “Confessions of Felix Krull”.

The Lübecker Nachrichten newspaper will print a supplement (in German) to this Sunday’s paper that contains all the details of the films and the schedule; the journal will then be available at all festival venues from November 26. The full catalogue and schedule can be downloaded on our website: https://nordische-filmtage.de/en/programm/timetable/list/2024

The deadline for submitting an application for press credentials is October 27. Late applications will be charged a fee of 10 euros. Accreditation entitles the holder entry to all Nordic Film Days screenings free of charge.
