Twice Colonized

A collar made of seal fur adorns Aaju Peter’s court robes. A lawyer, she’s dedicated her life to the struggle for the rights of indigenous people of the Arctic. When she was 11, she was taken from her homeland in Greenland to Denmark. She had to go to school there, far from her family, and lost her native language and culture. Speaking Danish makes her uncomfortable to this day. As an adult, she settled in Canada, where she again experienced the colonization of the Inuit. After the sudden death of her son, Aaju embarks on a painful journey to the places of her childhood and other indigenous peoples. She starts writing a book about her life and advocating for a permanent indigenous forum within the EU. In her documentary, Lin Alluna gets very close to her protagonist. She lets the audience delve into the thoughts and feelings of this intrepid woman, and shows Aaju’s struggles with her own trauma and the end of a unhealthy relationship, along with her struggles for a self-determined future for her children and grandchildren.
