Poet Kostas Zelvys made a name for himself with anti-Soviet poetry, which resulted in his expulsion from university and from the Lithuanian writers' union. Now he has returned to his hometown, where his heart still beats for the young librarian Jule, but she eyes him with mistrust. World War II has ended, but fighting continues in Lithuania, where partisans oppose the Soviet occupation. The Red Army manages to plant local collaborators into the ranks of the resistance, and the KGB also recruits Kostas. If he locates hiding places and names names, his parents won't be deported to a Siberian gulag. His sympathies lie with the partisans, and he begins writing poetry again. One of his new comrades asks him to act as a double agent. The film follows the young man caught in a moral dilemma, and captures the turmoil of a country fighting for its independence.
