Family Time

Mummola / Family Time

Narrative Features, Finland / Sweden 2023, 116 Min., finn. OV, engl. st

A house in an isolated snow-filled landscape. Christmas is just around the corner, and the door is continually opening and closing. Three generations are gathered around the table, and the camera also takes a seat. The director seems to know one thing for certain: Family, you can’t live with them, and you can’t live without them. With this approach, she observes the minor concerns and major fears of the individual family members, and their small and great joys. The grandchildren would like to watch a film on TV, while grandfather wants to watch sports. Grandmother notes with a voice of concern that her husband has already downed several bottles of beer this morning. One daughter feels ignored by her husband, while the other has sworn off new relationships entirely. They sweat together in the sauna. The way they argue in the film and then later come together to celebrate is taken from real life. Since nothing is overdramatized and nothing escalates, the audience can see themselves in one character or constellation. Merry Christmas!
