Beautiful Beings

Berdreymi / Beautiful Beings

Narrative Features, Iceland / Denmark / Netherlands / Sweden / Czech Republic 2022, 123 Min., icel. OV, engl./ger. st

Hunching his shoulders, as if he has to duck for cover, has become something of a habit for 14-year-old Balli. He’s bullied at school, and at home nothing awaits the lanky lad but a drug-addicted mother and a violent stepfather. His classmate Addi is better at expressing himself using his fists rather than words. Something like a friendship develops between them as the two traumatized boys discover a spiritual kinship. The film continually changes its look. It graphically depicts the precarious living situations of its protagonists, but also gives them downtime, during which they can drift off into the Icelandic world of myths and fairy tales. Maybe they could protect each other from the brutality of their environments, but what means do they have? From up close, we get to know young people who pass on the violence they’ve experienced.
