Mamma Gógó
Hommage, Iceland / Norway / Sweden / Germany / Great Britain 2010, 90 Min., icel. OF, engl. st
At the start of the film, Friðrik Þór Friðriksson’s cinematic alter ego appears onstage. The director is presenting his film to a packed house, “Children of Nature”, about two older people who have been shuffled off into a retirement home by their children. The director’s mother is in the audience. Like her son, she’s an avid movie fan, watches Charlie Chaplin films with her grandchildren, and isn’t averse to having a glass or two of wine. But she’s becoming increasingly confused or forgets the food cooking on the stove. Her son, in contrast, has other problems. Nobody wants to see his films and he’s on the verge of bankruptcy. However, he does have access to his mother’s bank account. In “Mamma Gógó”, Friðriksson plays a self-reflective game with his own filmography and deals with very personal topics – his mother also suffered from Alzheimer’s. This tragicomedy pays tribute to a woman who forges her own idiosyncratic path to bid farewell to the world.
