Opus #79 “Multidimensional”

Opus #79 “Multidimensional”

Immersion 360°, Denmark / USA 1932, 10 Min., no dialogue

With his equipment, light artist Thomas Wilfred (1889-1968), born in Denmark, created a new form of art at the intersection of technology and modern art. His lumia compositions – meditative, colourful echoes of the northern lights – that he displayed in silence, without musical accompaniment, were shown in 1952 at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The Opus #79 Multidimensional was completed in 1932. It used a 150-watt bulb, a painted colour wheel, and a spy glass to project the images onto a 9-inch pane of frosted glass. It was contained in a narrow housing. Unlike the Luminar #52 and the Clavilux Junior, meant to present light shows to audiences, Opus #79 Multidimensional was intended for personal use. “Opus #79” has been adapted to be experienced in the Dome.
