The Match Factory Girl

Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö / The Match Factory Girl / Das Mädchen aus der Streichholzfabrik

Hommage, Finland 1990, 70 Min., finn. OV, ger. st

It takes 23 minutes for Iris to speak her first sentence. Yet we're able to get closer to the ponytailed young woman with the narrow face – to learn about her daily life – even without words. When she's done working in the match factory, Iris cooks at home for her mother and her mother's boyfriend. Never once does she hear a $thank you%, even as she hands over her paycheck. When she rebels, Aki Kaurismäki and his film stand by their heroine. The camera joins forces with Kati Outinen's facial expressions, showing Iris' pride when she buys a dress; her expectant look when she enters a disco; her determination as she fights injustice. It's a bitter fairy tale that doesn't leave us bitter.
