One in a Million

Whitney Bjerken is a gymnast, singer, and social media star from Georgia, USA. On YouTube, she has over a million followers, most of them young girls. One of those is Yara, from Neumünster; she runs a fan account and is networked with other fans across the world. Yara admires Whitney for her ambition and talent, but doesn't really know yet what she wants for her own self. Whitney, in turn, tries to deal with the expectations and performance pressure she faces even as she posts short videos about her daily life for her fans. Director Joya Thome tells the stories of the two girls. Separated by continents and fame, they are nevertheless connected with each other. Up close and personal, the camera accompanies the protagonists through their everyday lives. A documentary double-portrait about growing up, loneliness and success, friendship and first love, and the search for one's own voice.
