Du levande / You, the Living / Das jüngste Gewitter

A woman loudly tells everyone around her that she feels misunderstood. Another waits in bed for her husband, who prefers to smoke a cigarette on the balcony. An office worker hopes that his colleagues will finally include him in their work. One common thread between the loosely-linked episodes of this film is people's longing to be seen and heard. The scenes, shot from a single camera position, recall tableaux vivants. The men and women seem lonely and lost in their familiar surroundings; they are all searching for a bit of happiness and a counterpart. When nothing else helps, they express their desires in song and musical interludes. But this disturbs the neighbours, and makes the customers in a pub stare even deeper into their glasses. And the husband? Still standing on the balcony, he closes the evening with a shrug and the words: "After all, tomorrow's another day”. The documentary film "Tomorrow's Another Day" (2011) by Johan Carlsson, which can be seen in the programme accompanying the homage, documents the process of shooting "You, the Living".
