From its orbit high above Earth, the Himawari 8 weather satellite watches the world. The view is a distant one, but it can recognise catastrophes happening on the planet below. For example, the ‘black summer’ of 2020, when out-of-control forest fires destroyed large swathes of Australia. With the help of algorithms, the satellite data is combined into a pictorial narrative about the planet Earth.
