"Descendants” is like ”Succession” transposed to the world of whale watching. This sharply-written Icelandic family drama, which also offers plenty of dark humour, follows three very different, middle-aged siblings who inherit the successful whale watching company and the beautiful summer house their parents built. One by one, we go deep with the ambitious career woman Arndís, flaky younger sister Rúna, and their needy brother Elvar. They each have to navigate the potential inheritance with their sparky and formidable mother, novelist Lóa. Every family member has old wounds that are re-opened as they explore this new reality, which brings out hurt and greed against the new gold rush of Iceland’s booming tourism industry. "Descendants” isn’t a small-scale local melodrama, this is a show full of big ideas, big emotions and big personalities shot in a cinematic style – and yes, there are a few whales to see.
