The Estonia ferry sinking of 1994 was the deadliest civilian maritime disaster in Europe, killing at least 852 people when the ferry sank near Finland en route from Tallinn to Stockholm. Even if you don’t remember the tragedy, this gripping series takes the Chernobyl approach in bringing us into the lives of many different characters – passengers, rescuers and volunteers, families devastated by loss, and the investigators from Finland, Sweden, and Estonia navigating cultural and political issues as they try to determine what happened and who is really to blame. Estonia is a hugely ambitious four-country co-production – the most expensive drama series ever made in Scandinavia – that immerses the audience in not only the chaotic hours of the disaster but also brings us the lives of so many normal people whose worlds were changed forever that night.
