Elaha

Filmforum, Germany 2023, 110 Min., ger., kurd. OV, ger. st

Elaha should actually be happy – the 22-year-old German-Kurdish woman will be marrying in a few weeks. Yet she has doubts: about giving up her dreams of passing her college-entrance exams; about her future husband, who is increasingly falling into traditional gender roles; and, last but not least, about herself and her own desires. On top of it all, there’s the specific issue that she is supposed to enter into marriage a virgin, which will have to be proven medically (as her girlfriends confirm during a secretive smoking break). Torn between the unconditional love for her family and her desire for freedom, she must make a difficult decision. Milena Aboyan has dedicated her thesis film to the global topic of sexual and bodily self-determination. Vividly acted and authentically directed, the film makes impressively clear what constraints and conflicts young women must cope with in patriarchal communities.
