A Sister of Six

Flickorna Gyurkovics / A Sister of Six / Die sieben Töchter der Frau Gyurkovics

Retrospektive, Sweden / Germany 1926, 102 Min., silent, ger. st.

Of Mrs Gyurkovics’ seven daughters, Mizzi is the wild one – she boxes, wears her hair in a bob, bewitches both men and women, whether wearing a ball gown or a frock coat, dances the Charleston, and flirts with the idea of a spot of cocaine. On her way home after being expelled from her girl’s boarding school in Budapest, she meets Count Horkay on the train. Little does she suspect that when they arrive in her home town of Kecskemét, he plans to pose as a cousin and ask for her eldest sister’s hand in marriage. But the best-laid plans … When the flapper era broke in the USA in the early 1920s, the producers of this whirlwind comedy of mistaken identity went looking for a suitable lead and found her Britain. Betty Balfour was the perfect embodiment of the young “new woman” – independent, androgynous, and rebellious. Lichtbild-Bühne, Germany’s first film magazine, wrote in 1927 that it was “a Swedish film full of photographic and acting culture. It is full of satisfying payoffs”. – Screening to be accompanied by live music by Lina Gronemeyer on clarinet and Frederik Sturm on piano.

Silent Film Screening with Musical Accompaniment:

The Retrospective section presents a deliciously entertaining whirlwind comedy of mistaken identity. At its core is a womanizer who travels to the countryside under a false identity with the intention of marrying one of the daughters of his best friend’s aunt. But of course, the best-laid plans, as they say. The screening of the 1927 silent will be accompanied by live music by Lina Gronemeyer on clarinet and Frederik Sturm on piano.
