Liv

Liv / Das Mädchen Liv

Retrospektive, Norway 1967, 88 Min., norw. OV, engl. st

Liv in this case is actor Vibeke Løkkeberg. When “Liv” was made, she was 22 and worked as a model. The film portrays one day of her life in “swinging Oslo”. It’s not a particularly special day. Liv has a job, she is on the hunt for an apartment, breaks up with her boyfriend, finds a new one. There are encounters with her father and her colleagues. Is Liv a fashion victim or a role model for an emancipated young woman? Vibeke Løkkeberg would become a dedicated film director and writer … What makes “Liv” fascinating is its playful and spontaneous style. The open narrative form is a perfect fit for Liv’s open attitude to life. The director was inspired by the French New Wave and “Blow Up”. With “Liv”, Norwegian cinema forged a link to Jean-Luc Godard and Michelangelo Antonioni. In the Morgenbladet newspaper, Sølve Skagen wrote that “Pål Løkkeberg has created a film that, in our backward film world, seems demonstratively modern” (24.6.1967).
