Pirates

Piratene / Pirates / Die Piraten

Retrospektive, Norway 1983, 93 Min., norw. OV, ger. st, SDH

In Svolvær, a small coastal town in the Lofoten archipelago, two unemployed young men set up a pirate radio station. Not only do they want to finally hear the latest music, they also want to have their interests represented. The station’s programming includes rock and roll, as well as talk radio, discussing their situation and calling for their peers to show solidarity. As they increasingly focus on commentary of local events, not only their fathers, but also the local politicians start to turn against them. But because they broadcast their subversive messages from a mobile transmitter, they are not all that easy to track down … Buttons on leather jackets and a poster of James Dean on the wall. Those international insignia of youth culture were familiar even in the remote Lofoten, with no Internet or MTV. The 1983 film is a realistic drama of youth with the characteristics of a suspenseful action and political thriller.
