Under Your Skin

Käpy selän alla / Under Your Skin / Tannenzapfen unter dem Rücken

Retrospektive, Finland 1966, 89 Min., 35 mm, black & white, Lichtt./Mono, finn. OV, engl. st

Two pairs of student go on a camping trip at a remote lake in Finland. They swim, tease each other and have minor fights that illuminate their problems and inhibitions. As the end of their holiday approaches, the campers have learned something about life and their own inner feelings … Inspired by the French New Wave, Mikko Niskanen’s summer romance was received as “a stylistically modern and sensitive film” (Ulrich Gregor) with surprisingly revealing erotic scenes, and was praised by both audiences and critics. The film incorporates scenes of untouched wilderness into the narrative without going overboard on portentous allegories, maintaining the feel of a carefree holiday atmosphere. And last but not least, the omnipresent pop appeal of “Under Your Skin” is reinforced by a live appearance of the now legendary beat band “The Creatures” at a forest party.
