Right On, Man!

Täältä tullaan, elämä! / Right On, Man! / Ich pfeif auf eure Hilfe!

Retrospektive, Finland 1979, 111 Min., finn. OV, engl. st

Punk music in place of a discrete organ. The high-volume acoustic action is actually one of the more harmless of offenses perpetrated by Jussi, who is relegated to a monitored class for difficult students. Lissu is the only girl in the class, but no less unruly than the five boys. When Jussi’s mate Pete tells him that Lissu might be interested in him, they begin awkwardly getting closer to each other, a relationship that ends with Jussi and Lissu deciding to run off together … The film stars Kati Outinen, familiar from Kaurismäki films, in her first screen role at the age of 18. It captures the spirit of the early punk movement in Helsinki, using among other things footage from Kill City, a legendary culture centre. Set against that authentic backdrop, “Right On, Man!” unfolds as an absorbing drama about an irrepressible young man, with the screenwriters influenced by François Truffaut’s “The 400 Blows” as well as their personal experiences.
