It's Always Been Me

Forvandlingen – frihed kommer indefra / It's Always Been Me

Young Audience, Denmark 2023, 72 Min., dan. OV, engl. st, ger. voice over, 12 years and older

Max and Bastian are in-between childhood and young adulthood – a time full of turmoil, uncertainty, and transformation. Alongside the questions that everybody faces during puberty, the two of them are also dealing with other changes: neither of them identifies with the gender that they were assigned at birth. While Max has been certain since last summer that he’s trans and a boy, the gender boundaries are more fluid and less fixed for Bastian. Surrounded by supportive family and friends and nevertheless confronted with challenges and hatred, the two young people are trying to find their own way to navigate their relationship to their bodies and what feels right, as well as a world that sees gender as an elementary attribute. Intimately and respectfully, Julie Bezerra Madsen portrays two young people trying to find their place in their world, while reflecting remarkably openly about what they have to go through to get there.
