Lübeck, November 1, 2023. The 65th Nordic Film Days Lübeck celebrated its opening night in the large theatre of the Cinestar Stadthalle multiplex. The largest festival in Europe for Nordic and Baltic films opened with the German premiere of the Swedish comedy “Together 99” (“Tillsammans 99”) by Lukas Moodysson. Producer Anna Carlsten and the actors Gustaf Hammarsten (Göran) and Anja Lundqvist (Lena) introduced the film to the Lübeck audience.

As part of the festivities, the NFL’s honorary award was presented to Swedish director and screenwriter Roy Andersson. The Homage of the 65th Nordic Film Days Lübeck is dedicated to the internally renowned filmmaker.

The honorific introduction was delivered by Fred Scott, whose documentary “Being a Human Person” about Andersson and his filmmaking style is screening in the Homage section. He considers Andersson “the single greatest underappreciated filmmaker alive in cinema today.”

He went on to say that he speaks “about an artist whose characters and stories have celebrated the glorious act of failure with such precision, hilarity and heart over a 60 year career. [...] He’s a filmmaker’s filmmaker, citing Alejandro Iñárritu, Darren Aronofsky, Ruben Östlund, The Wachowskis and Mike Leigh amongst his loudest advocates.”

Roy Andersson was unable to travel to Lübeck. He delegated Swedish director Carl Olsson to accept the honorary award in his stead. Olssen’s film “Vintersaga” will have its German premiere in the Competition section of the festival.

The recipients of the first two Script Development grants were also announced during the opening.

More than 180 films will be shown in 250 public screenings at Lübeck venues during the Nordic Film Days. And more than 50 percent of that line-up will be available for streaming by audiences all over Germany.

We would like to thank our partners Finnlines, CineStar, STAWAG, the Lübeck Public Utilities authority, Teschke & Collegen, Moinsener, skanbo, Grundstücksgesellschaft TRAVE, Convotis, avt plus Mediaservice, SG Medientechnik, and the media partners NDR and the Lübecker Nachrichten newspaper their support.
