"Why should we let a fence faze us?" the elderly Sámi woman in traditional clothing asks her granddaughter, Ester. "There have always been enough cloudberries for everyone"." She begins to sing a song in her language, and the camera lingers on Ester's face for a long time. Like many Sámi at the end of the '70s, she is ashamed of her heritage – she even conceals her ethnicity from her new colleagues at the primary school in Alta, Norway, where she has taken a job as teacher. She tries to fit in, even laughing along when derogatory jokes are made about her people. Her cousin Mihkkal, on the other hand, embraces his roots with pride and fights for the rights of the Sámi. When a Sámi settlement on a river has to make way for a dam, Ester begins to realize that the struggle for the riverside location is also a rebellion against decades of discrimination against her people. She has to make a decision.
