Slow
Narrative Features, Lithuania / Sweden / Spanien 2023, 108 Min., lith. OV, engl./ger. st, SDH
Elena is a dancer and teaches deaf children, which is how she meets Dovydas, a sign-language interpreter. After their very first lesson working together, they go for a walk. Although they don’t know each other yet, they both sense a pleasant rapport. They’re attracted to each other, laugh about the same things, and discover that they are soulmates. Dovydas is asexual and has absolutely no desire to have sex. Despite this, the two decide to start dating and attempt to meet their needs and desires while accepting each other’s limitations. “Slow” is a very body-centric film whose characters express themselves primarily through their physicality. Elena’s choreographies are passionate and excessive, while Dovydas interprets a melodramatic pop song with empathic movements. The camera’s tender gaze explores a topic that has rarely been dealt with on screen before.
