For her eighteenth birthday, Molly’s best friend Tobias gives her a very special present – the promise that together they will find Molly’s biological father. With a somewhat wobbly handheld camera, Tobias documents Molly’s search for her roots. Their first stop is the fertility clinic where Molly’s mother, Nina, told her that she was conceived. But that turns out to have been a lie. Then they find a promising lead in an old photo album. On the back of a picture of her mother and a fellow student are the words, “Daniel and I in the third month. The man I have to thank for everything”. Except Sonja, Nina’s new partner and Molly’s stepmother, says there are four other possible paternity candidates. While she searches for used toothbrushes, cotton swabs, and single hairs, Molly is confronted by thoughts of what might have been ... and whether or not that’s important in the end.
