Scandinavian Buddenbrooks. Lecture for the Retrospective

Thomas Mann’s novel “Buddenbrooks" was published 125 year ago. That was the beginning of an unparalleled success story, including a Nobel prize. To date, there have been six film adaptations. Scandinavian literature was a decisive factor in the story of Thomas Mann’s debut book. Works by the Norwegian writers Alexander Kielland and Jonas Lie provided important impetus. The character of sensitive and moony Hanno Buddenbrook would be unthinkable without the popular novel “Niels Lyhne” by Danish writer Jens Peter Jacobsen. This lecture will delve into that and other influences right up to the far north. It explores the idea of a specifically cinematic rendering of the texts and clears up the role Ingmar Bergman played in all that. This event is presented as part of the “Tuesday lecture" series mounted by the non-profit Gemeinnützige organisation. Following his lecture, Nils Louen, researcher at Buddenbrooks House, will open up the discussion to the audience.

Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, 7:30–9:00 pm
