Presentation of the 2026 Retrospective
Buddenbrooks p:reloaded

The 2026 Retrospective is dedicated to Thomas Mann’s literary role models from
Scandinavia, and their influence on Nordic cinema. As in Mann’s “Buddenbrooks", money and multi-generational families are key motifs in the films. Several of them are based on books that Thomas Mann was aware of when he was writing his debut novel. Others carry on the tradition of the Nordic family saga or turn the Scandinavian novel of commercial life into films. Their dramatic intensification of those issues opens a new gateway to Thomas Mann’s work. Jörg Schöning, curator of the Retrospective, introduces and contextualises the films.
