„Fortuna“, Episode 1. Filmvorführung mit „Buddenbrooks“-Lesung

Events

In his 1883 novel “Poison”, Norwegian writer Alexander Kielland criticised the authoritarian education methods of his era, branding them as poisonous to young people. Thomas Mann also tackled coercion and exam anxiety in the school episode of “Buddenbrooks”. It was based on his own experiences at the Katharineum secondary school in Lübeck, as well as motifs from Kielland’s book. Following the German premiere of the 1993 Kielland film adaptation, Heiner Kock, a member of the Theater Lübeck ensemble, will read from the school chapter of Mann’s novel.
