"Alcohol," muses Frauke, a regular sitting at the at the bar of the smoky pub named Klaus Meine, "is like a good movie. You just cut away the boring parts". The life of the pub's manager, Jesse Bronske, is actually not all that exciting. He has a semi-detached house in the boondocks of northern Germany, and a pub in the dreary supermarket named Superbuhei. The same faces every day, not to mention the annoying branch manager Stanislawski, and evenings spent watching game shows on the sofa. At least Jesse has begun attending a screenwriting seminar – much to the delight of his wife, Mona. But his life is turned upside down when he surprises a burglar one night. But was it really a burglar? Or is a mysterious doppelganger trying to steal his life? In his debut feature, Josef Brandl adapts the eponymous novel by Sven Amtsberg about a man in a crisis, caught between paranoia and an unprocessed past. Laconic humour, stylistically confident cinematography, and a soundtrack by The Düsseldorf Düsterboys make for a film that is as idiosyncratic as it is entertaining.
