Ribadit / Pulling in the Belt
Hommage, Sápmi / Norway 2019, 10 Min., DCP, sámi OV, engl. st
Ribadit is a traditional Sámi dance of passion and rivalry. The male dancer holds the belt of the female dancer and leads her firmly across the dance floor. If two male dancers reach for the same belt at the same time, the rivalry begins … Veteran Ribadit dancers explain the strict rules, which are then demonstrated by young Sámi in elegant turns and dramatic jumps.
