Ofelaš – Veiviseren / Pathfinder
Hommage, Sápmi / Norway 1987, 86 Min., colour, norw. OV, engl. st, FSK 12
On snow-covered tablelands in a majestic landscape, amid piercing cold, a brutal battle for survival rages. When the warrior people, the Chude, kill his family, young Sámi Aigin flees to the neighbouring village. To save its inhabitants from certain death, he hires on with the murderers as a guide. But on the never-ending ice, the hunters become the hunted. Based on oral folklore and accompanied by haunting joik songs by Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, "Pathfinder" was the first large-scale period film in Sámi history. The protagonist is not a classical hero who manages to best all travails. He is a young man who uses the knowledge and traditions that his ancestors acquired in the fight for survival. At the edge of a mountain precipice, the putative pathfinder uses his local knowledge to stage a perilous manoeuvre.
