Dulkės, kaulai ir stebuklai / Holy Destructors
Documentary Films, Lithuania / France / Latvia 2025, 85 Min., DCP, lith., span. OV, engl. st
Enlarged by a factor of 1000, a world of microfungi is revealed. The organisms change, replicate, and transform everything they colonise – objects, plants, human remains. Through a circular frame, as if through a microscope, yet at a safe distance, the film observes restorers as they clean a religious painting. Another crew preserves embalmed bodies from a church crypt to prepare them for the bier. Humans exert enormous amounts of energy in conserving that which is perishable or from the past. Meanwhile, the fungi continue about their business. They outlast time and death, of which they are a part. The grow in places where everything else fades. Without commentary, this film juxtaposes that organic process with human achievements. It is a contemplative, and at times humorous look at the cycle of life, and an invigorating perspective on transience.
