The wind whips up the sea; the mountains are shrouded in clouds. In a few brief strokes, the scene is set for the everyday life of young fisherman Baldur and his mother, widowed at an early age. Life on the Faroe Islands in the 19th century is hard. When Baldur capsizes in thick fog, his life is saved by Helge, a passing Danish whaler. Baldur is overcome by a longing for the kind of freedom that is taboo in his strictly religious village community. The only witness to the men's passion is the rugged natural landscape. Yet when Helge signs on to the next ship to arrive, Baldur pulls back – and is left to fish Helge’s body out of the water after a storm.
With Helge’s sudden death, loneliness, longing, and desire morph into a completely different genre. Baldur’s grief releases supernatural forces. This folk horror tale uses vampirism not for shock value, but to radically prolong a love that could find no place in life, and now refuses to accept death.
