Varastatud tulevik / Becoming Roosi
Young Audience, Estonia / Germany 2025, 84 Min., eston., engl. OV, ger. st, FSK 0, 14 years and older
Who is going to save the damn world? Is it really the job of Roosi and her generation? Or is she free to follow her dreams? Roosi from Estonia longs to express herself. She dances, takes photographs, and imagines a future as a performance artist. Her mother is a climate activist. She brought Roosi up in a hippie commune, making sure her daughter was aware of global problems from a young age. Who needs art when the world is dying? Does it make more sense to get a diploma from an international school in Germany? Without judgement and closely connected to her protagonist, documentary filmmaker Margit Lillak followed Roosi for more than ten years. Together – incorporating Roosi’s own, very intimate, film material – they allow us a profound look at the challenges that Roosi faces while growing up. We get to know a young woman who neither makes it easy for herself, nor lets anyone else get away with simple answers while she searches for her place in the world.
