The Nosferatu Window

Das Nosferatu-Fenster / The Nosferatu Window

Events & Cooperations

Many of the scenes from the horror classic “Nosferatu” by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, were shot in the early 1920s in northern Germany. Among the filming locations was Lübeck, with actors from the city’s municipal theatre playing parts in the silent flick about the count from Transylvania. Year after year, film fans make the pilgrimage to the historic salt storage building on the Obertrave, where Nosferatu took up residence to watch his next victim. The close-up of the vampire in the window is legendary. To close out the anniversary year, the Nordische Filmtage Lübeck has created a public installation that makes one of the most famous scenes in film history palpable at the very spot where it was filmed.
