Children of Nature

Börn náttúrunnar / Children of Nature / Children of Nature - Eine Reise

Hommage, Iceland / Norway / Germany 1991, 85 Min., icel. OV, engl. st

Geiri, almost eighty years old, takes one last sip of the cool water from his well. Then he puts on his best suit and packs his few personal belongings: a wall clock and a portrait of his deceased wife when she was young. Geiri bids farewell to his life as a sheep farmer and his secluded existence. He gets on a bus bound for Reykjavík, to go to his daughter and her family, and finds himself in an anonymous block of apartments. From the window, he has a view of a construction site. The intermezzo in his granddaughter’s room is short, and Geiri is shoved off to a retirement home, where he encounters his childhood sweetheart, Stella. Together they decide to make their escape. They steal a jeep, hitchhike, and later even set off in a boat. Their destination is the Westfjord region, where they both spent their childhoods. It’s a road trip to the past, into an almost uninhabited region that is loaded with memories for Geiri and Stella.
