Did women’s liberation start from the tops of their heads? In 1963, Danish radio salesman Arne Bybjerg Pedersen introduced the world’s first electric hair rollers, which freed women from spending hours in the salon, letting them create their own hairstyles at home in just 10 minutes. This warm-hearted drama follows Arne and his wife Tove as they struggle to get the business off the ground after a series of funny mishaps. Soon, the factory hires local farmers’ wives– led by Birthe– giving them newfound freedom as well as their first paychecks, which changes both their lives and society forever. Writer Mette Heeno and her creative team interviewed Pedersen, former factory workers, engineers, and hairdressers to bring authenticity to the drama’s interwoven stories. The production design, costumes and swinging music – and of course the glossy hairstyles – celebrate the colourful, stylish vibe of the 1960s.
