Lured by the prospect of a better life, thousands of North Macedonians worked at US military bases in Afghanistan and Iraq. From their remittances, their families at home built small palaces. With the withdrawal of the troops, they return to that homeland – carrying war experiences and trauma. The connections between the abstract war far away and the concrete effects at home are complex.
