Thomas Mann and the "snow dreams" of Nordic cinema – lecture to accompany the Retrospective of the Nordic Film Days Lübeck

For his descriptions of snow, snow, snow in his masterpiece “The Magic Mountain”, Thomas Mann was inspired by works of Nordic literature. The 2024 NFL Retrospective is screening classic film versions of some of those works – by Knut Hamsun, Selma Lagerlöf and Hans Christian Andersen, among others – alongside about a dozen additional cinematic renditions of those literary $snow dreams%.
Jörg Schöning, the Retrospective curator, will talk on the subject before opening the discussion up to the audience.
