In documentary film, agency describes the task of filmmakers to make decisions and actively shape the narrative. The focus is on dealing authentically with perspectives, experiences, and voices.

While Annelie Boroș is working on a film about care work, her good friend and roommate takes her own life. The question of the task of care becomes even more urgent. “The Tender Revolution” follows people who have made care their purpose in life: Arnold from Hamburg, who looks after his severely disabled son Nico and is involved in activism; Polish caregiver Bożena, who deplores the exploitation of the agencies and demands greater appreciation of the psychological stress the profession entails; Samuel, a wheelchair user who is setting up an inclusive housing project; and indigenous climate activist Amanda, who knows that we are only healthy if our living space is too. They are all fighting for recognition, more rights, and a more inclusive world. Annelie Boroș dedicates her film to these perspectives on care work, accompanying her protagonists in their everyday lives and entering a dialog with them about care and caregiving.

Based on her film and the work on the topic and with her protagonists, the Masterclass will explore the question of agency: Who tells the story? By what means and with what goal? What responsibility do filmmakers have towards their protagonists? Which voices are heard? Who is being talked about? What role does documentary filmmaking play when it enters the sphere of political activism?
