Waitress Ilona climbs into the tram after work and greets Lauri the driver with a kiss: he's her husband. Happy in their modest everyday lives, they travel home together. Yet unemployment is just around the corner. The couple has no sooner marvelled at the remote-controlled TV that they bought on instalment than they begin to struggle with social decline. As in other Kaurismäki films, it is capitalism that wreaks havoc. The restaurant where Ilona is head waitress is bought by a chain. The transport authority has to cut staff. Their increasingly tight budget barely covers a sausage for the dog. The more desperate the situation, the more determined Ilona becomes: why not open her own restaurant? She calls her former colleagues. Though the film may have the tone of a fairy tale, it never loses sight of its brave heroine's reality.
