En vez de árboles / Instead of Trees / Anstatt Bäumen

On a walk through the woods, Argentinian film critic Roger Koza remarks that German forests are special. The woods here are unusually close to the cities, he says, and civilisation begins just behind the last row of trees. Koza is tracking the nature of nature – and because he loves films, he wants to know how nature is portrayed. He takes us on visits to a natural history museum and exhibitions, and to meet artists who reflect on the imagery of nature. We travel across the world – from Dithmarschen to the Black Forest to South America, and into the virtual world of computer games. In a kaleidoscopic collage of staged and documentary scenes, encounters, and conversations about film, art, and images of nature, director Philipp Hartmann and his accomplice Koza develop an associative approach to the relationship between humans and nature.
