On a ski vacation in the French Alps, an upper middle class Swedish family with two children witnesses an avalanche. For a brief moment, it seems that the snow might engulf the terrace restaurant of their hotel. While Ebba instinctively grabs her son and daughter, Tomas runs off alone with his smartphone. Even though they were never in any real danger, the display of nature’s power inexorably takes its toll on the family... In a fully denatured, artificial snowscape created by bulldozers and snow guns, the unexpected event fractures the family dynamic, throwing them from the self-assured trail they were on and triggering existential doubts. The marriage wobbles, the children whine, and Tomas must contend with his failed courage and tarnished sense of masculinity – whereby his encounters with the sports tourists that Thomas Mann acerbically dubbed $sports plebs% do not help much.
