Midnattssolens son / The Son of the Midnight Sun / Der Sohn der Mitternachtssonne
Retrospektive, Sweden 1939, 81 Min., sw. OV, engl. st
The Sámi couple Nila and Marja are engaged to be married. But when Nila’s reindeer herd dies in a snowstorm, he is forced to go work as a lumberjack at the Kiruna mines. There, he meets day labourer Heikola, who is wanted by the police. Nila eventually manages to put together a new reindeer herd and marries Marja. But then one day during the reindeer migrations, he once again encounters Heikola, who is now targeting Nila's valuable animals... With an enthralling plot, the film combines documentary passages and dramatised scenes to illuminate the life of the Sámi across the seasons. In addition to modern achievements like schooling and healthcare, $The Son of the Midnight Sun% also makes clear the importance of skis and sleighs to survival in the snowy and unforgiving landscape. Cameraman Sepp Allgeier, a loyal Nazi, delivered the magnificent images of the natural world. Meanwhile actor Peter Freuchen, who played the villain, joined Willy Brandt and Thomas Mann in agitating for the release of Carl von Ossietzky from a Nazi concentration camp.
