My Fathers’ Daughter

Biru Unjárga / My Fathers’ Daughter

Young Audience, Norway / Finland / Sweden 2024, 78 Min., northern sámi, norw., engl., dan. OV, ger., engl. st, 14 years and older

Fifteen-year-old Elvira thinks she was conceived with the help of a Danish fertility clinic. In her daydreams, her father is Danish film star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who will open the door for her to a new life. It will be far away from the sleepy town of Nesseby in the northeastern-most corner of Norway, where she lives with her Sámi mother, Beate. Everything in Nesseby is slow and boring. Even when her mother, who now has a girlfriend, comes out, she’s five years behind the times. So it’s all the more of a shock to Elvira when her real father suddenly appears. From that point on, she is confronted with a very different genetic and cultural heritage than the one she’d dreamt up for herself. Now fully Sámi instead of half-Danish, she believes she’s lost all chance of a successful life. Sensitive and humorous, Egil Pedersen’s coming-of-age film recounts the story of a self-confident young heroine who rises to the challenge of finding a new place for, and accepting, herself and her family.
