Lars er LOL / Lars is LOL

Young Audience, Norway 2023, 89 Min., norw. OV, engl. st, ger. voice over, 8 years and older

Eleven-year-old Amanda’s excitement about the first day of the new school year is dampened when she is tasked with mentoring the new kid in class, Lars, who has Down’s syndrome. The rest of the class—unfortunately including Adam, on whom she has a crush—pity her and make fun of her. So it’s all the more of a surprise when a delightful friendship develops between Amanda and Lars. But only in secret, because she is unable to overcome her fear that Lars will embarrass her in front of the others. Especially not after discovering a deplorable blog that shamelessly disparages Lars and could soon take aim at her as well. Will Amanda find the courage to stand up for her friendship with Lars? $Lars is LOL% tells the story of an unusual friendship and explores serious issues with a light and warm-hearted touch: the desire to belong, bullying, betrayal, and self-empowerment. The film is based on the book of the same name by Norwegian author Iben Akerlie.
