My Eternal Summer

Min evige sommer / My Eternal Summer

Narrative Features, Denmark 2024, 104 Min., dan. OV, ger./engl. st

The long holiday has begun, and the 15-year-old Fanny and her parents leave for the family’s summer home near the coast. The trio is a well-oiled team. Books are read, walks are taken, swimming is done. Everything seems to be the same as always – nevertheless, the sense is that this is a summer of goodbyes. The light-filled images belie an unspoken grief: the mother is terminally ill. The warm sunlight provides comfort. Friends drop by. They have a picnic and, in the evening, they gather together in front of the TV. The time shared is precious. All the same, Fanny wants to enjoy the summer. She goes to a club, meets up with her girlfriends, and her boyfriend comes to visit for a few days. Their bodies get closer to each other and give each other support. With quiet images and a perceptive eye, the film accompanies a young girl who, despite the sadness of the times, still also wants to have some carefree moments – and does.
