Sultana's Dream

El sueño de la Sultana / Sultana's Dream / Sultanas Traum

Filmforum, Germany / Spanien 2023, 86 Min., span., basque, engl., hindi, bengali OV, ger. st

Amidst the hustle and bustle of a large Indian city, Spanish artist Inés comes across a copy of “Sultana's Dream”. The feminist-utopian science fiction story by Bengali author Rokeya Hossain, published in 1905, describes “Ladyland”, where gender roles are reversed. The book's ideas won't let Inés go; they sharpen not only her view of social role models but also her approach to the art of storytelling and her own life. Her journey takes her to her mother's Basque homeland, to her eternally unreliable father, and back to India again. Following in Rokeya Hossain's footsteps, she explores the Kolkata of both today and yesterday. In her feature film debut, director Isabel Herguera artfully interweaves the various narrative levels with the present in which Inés lives, and skilfully uses the creative freedom of animated film to visually depict the fantastic worlds, atmospheric settings and complex inner journey of her protagonist.
