Them and Us

Lasse og Geir / Them and Us / Lasse und Geir

Retrospektive, Norway 1976, 91 Min., norw. OV, engl. st

No jobs, no prospects. Instead, beer and noise. Suburban teenagers Lasse and Geir land in a jail cell after causing trouble with their aggressive talk and obscene gestures on a bus. They’re not particularly welcome in their bleak family homes, so the friends spend two days marauding through Oslo. They keep their head above water with petty theft. Until they finally meet Kjersti, a taxi driver who seems to understand their distress … Max and Moritz, Tom and Huck, Beavis and Butt-Head are all choirboys by comparison with Lasse and Geir, who push back against self-satisfied Norwegian society with anarchic rage, and challenge the establishment. This garish social drama marked the beginning of the collaboration of the directing duo Wam & Vennerød, which stirred up Norwegian cinema for 20 years with their provocative films about youth and counter-culture. To what extent they did that can be seen in “The Last Movie” in the NFL Documentary section, a portrait of Petter Vennerød, who died in 2021.
