More about the Language of Love

Mera ur kärlekens språk / More about the Language of Love / Variationen der Liebe II

Retrospektive, Sweden 1970, 78 Min., sw. OV, engl. st

Homosexuality, transvestitism, and transsexuality are key subjects in the semi-documentary sex education films made by husband and wife psychologists Inge and Sten Hegeler. Using interviews with experts and an activist, the film depicts without judgement the everyday life of homosexual couples and acquaintances. Staged scenes – in a bar or disco, in their home kitchens or beds – free their sexual practices from the taint of abnormality and integrate them into the broad spectrum of human behaviours. The subjects of sexually-transmitted disease and sex with the disabled are also the subject of discussions between doctors and those affected, with which this sequel to “Language of Love” (1969, NFL 2010) fosters a public debate on taboo subjects. However, with a look behind the scenes of Scandinavia’s porn industry, in sometimes graphic scenes, the film also satisfies contemporary audiences’ voyeuristic needs.
