Being Ola

Ola – En helt vanlig uvanlig fyr / Being Ola

Documentary Films, Norway 2023, 72 Min., norw. OV, engl. st

Ola, who is 30 years old, lives in a small Norwegian village where people with and without disabilities live together in a harmonious community. They are largely self-sufficient, run a bakery, a carpentry workshop and a nursery, cook together, throw parties, and support one another. Ola is an optimistic, funny and introspective young man with a mild cognitive impairment, something he’s very open about. Although Ola has come to accept himself in his uniqueness, he does worry about how others view him and dreams of living a more independent life. When his best friend leaves the village and returns home, it marks the beginning of a new chapter in Ola’s life as he sets about making his desire for more independence a reality. “Being Ola” is an endearing portrait of an exceptional young man who puts his heart into fighting for equality, acceptance, and independence.
